1. There are over 12,000 ant species worldwide (50 in the UK)
I’ve seen flying ants before but never gave it much thought as to why some have wings and some don’t... I always guest it was some kind of “level up” mechanic, like in computer games where you unlock flying when you reach a certain level.
The flying ants on the other hand are a mixture of male drones and the virgin queens! These queens will produce up to 1000 eggs per day for new colonys...
5. The ant is one of the world’s strongest creatures in relation to its size
10. The largest ant’s nest ever found was over 3,700 miles wide!
4. Ants are the longest living insects!
9. Ants don’t have ears, and some of them don’t have eyes!

8. Ants are social insects which live in colonies
...but they only go out to breed once a year when the weather is just right.
Ants you normally see running around your garden are all females!! Crazy right! These wingless female ants do all the work of the colony... all of it! But they are sterile and can’t reproduce.

6. Ants hold the record for the fastest movement in the animal kingdom
So next time you want to get the bug spray out to go to town on these tiny winged bugs, just remember they only come out to start a family... ...and it only happens once a year!! So maybe just let them be.
2. The bullet ant is said to have the most painful sting in the world!
Today I opened up the garden shed to dig out the big parasol (as it was boiling hot) only to find an ant colony under the old wooden door.
Obviously this sent all the little critters mental! I was just about to close the door and leave them too it when I noticed some had wings!
3. Fire ants cause over £3 billion worth of damage a year!
7. Ants can be found on every single continent except Antarctica
Only when the weather is just right will all these flying male and queen ants fly out en masse to start new colonies.
